Game Day: Ottawa Senators at New York Islanders

Friday, 7 p.m., Barclay’s Center. TV: TSN5, RDS 2. Radio: TSN 1200-FM, Unique 94,5-FM

Five Keys To The Game

1. Inspiring the goaltender. Whether it’s Mike McKenna or Marcus Hogberg in the Senators’ net, the players in front of them can make their lives more comfortable with a solid effort.

2. Straightening out the defensive miscues: OK, this is one that can be used in just about every game day box, but after four full days away from the rink, fundamentals remain key for the Senators to have success.

3. Lehner’s magic: Once upon a time, Islanders netminder Robin Lehner was the Senators’ goaltender of the future. Now, he’s the Senators’ nemesis of the present, with a record of 6-0-3, a .947 save percentage and 1.70 goals-against average against Ottawa.

4. Energy levels on empty: The first game back after the Christmas break is often a sloppy affair, partly due to players trying to re-discover their legs after being away from the ice for an extended period.

5. Sense of the occasion: With Craig Anderson out, at least in the short term, there is an opportunity for someone to take a firm hold of the net during the next few nights.

Key matchup

Mathew Barzal versus Colin White: Barzal won the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year in 2017-18, but he’s currently going through a little bit of a sophomore jinx, with five goals and 24 assists so far, while trying to serve as a top-line centre for a relatively inexperienced Islanders squad. White, meanwhile, has firmly established himself as the second-line centre with the Senators behind Matt Duchene. If not for Vancouver’s Elias Pettersson, he might actually be in the running for the 2018-19 Calder Trophy.
