Islanders’ fire back at Rob Schremp over John Tavares comments

The New York Islanders were speedy to protect their previous “selfish” captain.

“He’s a fantastic teammate,” said defenceman Thomas Hickey, who played 6 seasons alongside Tavares in New York. “For any person to say he’s egocentric, they are just misguided. It’s possible they are on the lookout for a headline.”

That essential tweet from retired Islander Rob Schremp expressing Tavares “just collects HIS points and HIS awards” certainly created for an interesting headline previous 7 days.

Positive, Tavares left the Islanders to sign up for his childhood team in Toronto, but his previous teammates even now have his back — more than enough for several of them to condemn Schremp’s unsavoury accusations.

“The calendar year John missing the scoring title by a single issue (to Jamie Benn in 2014-15), in a meaningless participate in about halfway as a result of the calendar year I shot it and it looked like Johnny tipped it,” Hickey recalled. “He acquired credit rating for it. Following the match he explained, ‘I’m heading to modify that, I didn’t touch it — that was your issue.’”

“If the team isn’t owning achievement and he is, it is not his fault,” explained Jordan Eberle, who only put in a season with Tavares in Extended Island. “I’ve never ever seen him be egocentric. (The tweet) was a little bit astonishing. I was stunned, since I know John and played with him and I think the bulk of fellas who played with him will say the exact point.”

“The way he normally takes care of himself and all that — he wanted to be the most effective. Which is his objective. Everything he did was for the team,” echoed Islanders winger Andrew Ladd. “Nothing but fantastic factors from me as a teammate. He’s acquired a fantastic rep in this space.”

Even though the Islanders guaranteed do not feel to agree with Schremp, this story line must add a little a lot more gas to the fire as Tavares prepares to make his hugely-expected return to Extended Island on February 28.
