New York Islanders call up Devon Toews

After Thomas Hickey got injured against the Colorado Avalanche, the New York Islanders called up Devon Toews from Bridgeport.

During the New York Islanders game against the Colorado Avalanche, Thomas Hickey and Brock Nelson both recieved injuries. Fortunately for Nelson, he was able to play against Arizona the following night. Hickey was not so lucky.

While none of the fans want to see one our own get injured, this is a great opportunity for Devon Toews.

Devon Toews, a fourth round pick by the Isles in 2014, has been having a tremendous season for Bridgeport. Just like Josh Ho-Sang, Toews has been a stand out preformer down in the AHL.

So far in the AHL this season, Toews has put up five goals and 14 assists for 19 points through 24 games. That is very impressive from a defenseman. Toews’ offensive play hasn’t been the only thing bringing him up to the bigs.

He has been highly praised for his defensive side of the game as well as his speed and offense. He won the AHL fastest skater at their 2017 All Star game.

Toews is a puck moving defenseman and his assist tally shows that. A lot of Islander fans have been complaining that the team relys too much on veterans but they are giving Toews, a 24 year old rookie, a shot. Lamoriello has shown previously that he likes the young guns as well.

Not only did he give Ho-Sang his shot, which is paying off (so far), he nor Trotz gave up on a struggling Anthony Beauvillier, who is now flourishing. He showed his importance on young guns in Toronto and now Toews, and the Islanders are seeing that.

Toews is going to get a chance to play in the NHL for the first time in his career. It’s been a long time coming but it’s fonally here. With what we’ve seen from him at the AHL he shouldn’t have a hard time.
